Day 2: Huangshizhai & Golden Whip Stream

Morning | Huangshizhai Scenic Area

Huangshizhai, or “Yellow Stone Stronghold,” is the largest viewing platform in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and the most iconic spot to witness the park’s unique pillar formations. It offers unobstructed panoramic views of thousands of towering sandstone peaks, lush forests, and winding streams.
The name “Huangshizhai” comes from a legend that Zhang Liang, a famous strategist from the Han Dynasty, once lived here in seclusion after retiring from official life. Today, it is one of the most popular spots for photographers and nature lovers to capture the park’s dramatic landscapes, especially at sunrise when the peaks are often shrouded in mist, creating a magical, ethereal atmosphere.

Lunch | Local Restaurant Recommendation

  • Recommendation: Head to a family-run restaurant near the park entrance for farm-to-table Hunanese dishes, such as stir-fried wild vegetables, local mushrooms, and smoked pork. Many places also offer bamboo rice, a fragrant dish cooked with rice and ingredients inside fresh bamboo tubes.

Afternoon | Golden Whip Stream Canyon

Golden Whip Stream, named for a legend about a golden whip that was once hidden here, is a peaceful 7.5km valley walk that follows a crystal-clear stream through forested cliffs and towering rock formations. The trail is flat and easy, making it suitable for all fitness levels, and offers a chance to see the park’s wildlife, including macaques and various bird species.
The stream is known for its crystal-clear water, which reflects the surrounding peaks and trees, creating a mirror-like effect. As you walk, you’ll pass by iconic sights like the “Shoe Rock” and “Crab Rock,” as well as waterfalls and small pools where you can dip your feet to cool off. The canyon is also famous for its lush vegetation, including rare plants and ancient trees that have grown here for centuries.

Dinner Recommendation

  • Recommendation: Try the local fish hotpot at a restaurant near your hotel. The fish is caught fresh from the local rivers and cooked in a spicy, flavorful broth, perfect for warming up after a day of hiking.

Day 3: Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain & “Charming Xiangxi” Show

It is home to the iconic “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain,” the inspiration for the floating mountains in the movie Avatar, as well as the “One Step to Heaven,” a narrow passage between two cliffs that offers breathtaking views.
The highlight of Yuanjiajie is the Bailong Elevator, also known as the “Hundred Dragons Sky Elevator,” which is the tallest outdoor elevator in the world. Built into the side of a cliff, it rises 326 meters (1,070 feet) in just 1 minute and 58 seconds, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks as you ascend. Your tour includes a one-way ticket on the elevator, so you can experience this engineering marvel without waiting in line.

Lunch | Local Restaurant Recommendation

  • Recommendation: Stop at a restaurant near the Yuanjiajie cable car station for a quick lunch of local noodles or rice bowls with stir-fried meat and vegetables. Many places also offer homemade pickles and spicy sauces to add extra flavor.

Afternoon | Tianzi Mountain

Tianzi Mountain, or “Emperor Mountain,” is named after a local hero who once led a rebellion against the Qing Dynasty and declared himself the “Emperor” of the region. It is known for its wide-open views of peaks rising above the clouds, as well as its unique rock formations, such as the “Four Generals Peak” and the “Heavenly Book Scroll.”
The mountain is located at an altitude of 1,262 meters (4,140 feet), and its summit offers panoramic views of the entire Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The area is also famous for its sea of clouds, which often forms in the early morning and after rain, creating a dramatic and otherworldly atmosphere.

Evening | “Charming Xiangxi” Show

The “Charming Xiangxi” show is a world-famous performance that showcases the rich ethnic culture and traditions of the Xiangxi region, home to the Tujia, Miao, and Dong ethnic minorities. The show features a variety of performances, including folk dances, traditional music, and acrobatics, as well as displays of local customs such as the “bridal cry” and “face-changing.”
Your tour includes VIP seats, so you can enjoy the show in comfort with the best views of the stage. The performance is held in a large open-air theater and is one of the most popular cultural shows in China, attracting millions of visitors every year.

Dinner | Before the Show

  • Recommendation: Have dinner at the theater’s restaurant or a nearby eatery before the show. Try the local Tujia-style dishes, such as smoked pork with bamboo shoots and glutinous rice cakes, which are a staple of the region’s cuisine.

Day 4: Tianmen Mountain & Fenghuang Ancient Town

Morning | Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area

Tianmen Mountain, or “Heaven’s Gate Mountain,” is one of the most famous landmarks in Zhangjiajie, known for its natural arch called “Heaven’s Gate,” a huge cave that runs through the mountain. The arch is 131.5 meters (431 feet) high and 57 meters (187 feet) wide, and according to legend, it is a gateway to heaven.
Your tour includes a ride on the Tianmen Mountain Cable Car, which is one of the longest cable car rides in the world, stretching 7.45 km (4.6 miles) and offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. At the summit, you’ll have the chance to walk on the glass skywalk, a transparent walkway built into the side of the cliff that offers heart-stopping views of the drop below. Shoe covers are provided for the glass walkway to keep it clean and prevent slipping.
The tour also includes round-trip escalators that take you through the mountain to the base of Heaven’s Gate, where you can climb the 999 steps to reach the top of the arch. Along the way, you’ll pass by several temples and shrines, as well as stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Lunch | On the Way to Fenghuang

  • Recommendation: Enjoy a box lunch or stop at a roadside restaurant on the way to Fenghuang Ancient Town. Try the local snacks, such as fried tofu and rice cakes, which are popular in the region.

Afternoon | Fenghuang Ancient Town

Fenghuang Ancient Town, also known as Phoenix Ancient Town, is a well-preserved riverside town located in western Hunan Province. It is famous for its traditional wooden stilt houses, cobblestone streets, and beautiful views of the Tuojiang River, which runs through the center of the town.
The town was built more than 1,300 years ago and has a rich history and culture, with a mix of Han, Miao, and Tujia ethnic influences. Your tour includes a sightseeing maglev ride, which takes you through the town’s most scenic areas and offers views of the river, the ancient buildings, and the surrounding mountains.

Evening | Seven-Layer Water Curtain Light Show

As night falls, the town comes alive with a spectacular light and water performance along the Tuojiang River. The Seven-Layer Water Curtain Light Show features colorful lights, music, and water effects that are projected onto a large water curtain, creating a magical and immersive experience. Traditional wooden boats, rowed by local guides, take you past the town’s iconic stilt houses, waterwheels, and ancient bridges, offering a unique perspective of the town’s architecture and daily life.
The boat ride is especially beautiful in the morning, when the town is quiet and the river is calm, reflecting the mist and the buildings. Along the way, your guide will share stories about the town’s history, legends, and local customs, giving you a deeper understanding of Fenghuang’s culture.

  2. Comfortable Footwear: Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes for hiking and walking, especially in Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang, where the trails and cobblestone streets can be uneven.
