8:00–11:00 Huaqing Palace

Huaqing Palace (also called Huaqing Hot Springs) is a legendary imperial garden at the foot of Lishan Mountain. With over 3,000 years of hot-spring history, emperors from the Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui, and Tang dynasties built palaces here. It reached its peak under Emperor Xuanzong (Tang Dynasty), who renamed it “Huaqing Palace” and visited nearly every October.

Famous for:
  • The romantic love story of Emperor Xuanzong & Yang Guifei (Concubine Yang), immortalized in the poem Song of Everlasting Sorrow.
  • The Imperial Hot Spring Pools (Guifei Pond, Lotus Pool, Star Pool) – original Tang Dynasty ruins.
  • The Five-Hall Platform, site of the 1936 Xi’an Incident, a turning point in modern Chinese history.
  • The historical allusion “Beacon Fires to Fool the Feudal Lords” originated in this area.

Hukou Waterfall lies on the Shaanxi–Shanxi border (Yichuan County, Yan’an City) – not in Xi’an but the most popular day-trip waterfall due to its raw natural power.

15:00–17:00 Huangdi Mausoleum & Xuanyuan Temple (Huangling County)

“First Mausoleum Under Heaven” – burial site of the Yellow Emperor (Huangdi), legendary ancestor of the Chinese nation.

  • On top of Qiaoshan Mountain; 3.6m high, 48m around; brick-walled.
  • Stone stele: “Dragon Ascent at Qiaoshan”; “Huangdi Mausoleum” inscribed by Guo Moruo.

Xuanyuan Temple
